Albany is New York's state capital and lies to the north of New York City on the west bank of the hudson river with a population of around 100,000 people.

Founded as a dutch trading post in 1614 it became a city in 1686 and the capital of New York State in 1797. The city was named after the English Duke of Albany who became James II of England.

The goverment is the main employer in Albany with in excess of 25% of the population working in government jobs, largely healthcare and education.
