The Cook Islands are a collection of 15 islands in the south Pacific Ocean with a population of some 20,000 people and a capital at Avarua on the island of Rarotonga.

The Cook Islands were a protectorate of New Zealand until 1965 when the islands became an independent country although still closely tied to New Zealand.

The main economic activity on the Cook Islands is tourism but in recent years the financial sector has grown.
