The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, commonly referred to as East Timor is situated in south east Asia with a population of some 1.2 million people and a capital city at Dili.

The country is on the island of Timor in the South Pacific and shares the island with Indonesia to the west. East Timor also extends to the islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse.

Formerly a Portuguese colony East Timor became independent in 1975. East Timor receives most of it's revenue from offshore oil and gas with the majority of the population relying on subsistence farming to survive.
