The Republic of Ecuador is situated in north west South America with a population of some 15.5 million people and a capital at Quito. Ecuador is bordered by Colombia and Peru with a coastline to the Pacific Ocean, part of Ecuador are the Galapagos Islands some 600 miles from the coast.

Ecuador was a Spanish colony and became an independent country in 1830.

Oil provides the majority of Ecuador's exports with the agricultural sector exporting bananas, cocoa and flowers. The country also has huge reserves of timber and a limited industrial sector mainly producing goods for home consumption.
