The Gabonese Republic is situated on the west coast of central Africa with a population of some 1.5 million people and a capital at Libreville. Gabon is bordered by Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and the Republic of the Congo with a coastline to the Atlantic Ocean.

Formerly a French colony Gabon achieved independence in 1960.

Oil has been the mainstay of the economy of Gabon but the oil reserves are rapidly decreasing. Gabon's other contributors to the economy are forestry and mining for manganese and iron ore.
