The Republic of Haiti is situated on the western part of the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea with a population of some 10 million people and a capital at Port-au-Prince, Haiti shares the island with the Dominican Republic.

Haiti was formerly a French colony but achieved full independence in 1825.

Haiti is a very poor country with more than two thirds of the population being officially unemployed. Tourism is very important to the economy with nearly 1 million visitors a year mostly from cruise ships although fear of violent crime keeps some visitors away from the country.
