The Independent State of Samoa is situated in the south Pacific Ocean with a population of some 200,000 people and a capital at Apia. The two main islands making up Samoa are Savaii and Upolu.

Samoa became independent from New Zealand in 1962.

The agricultural sector employs two thirds of the population and accounts for 90% of exports including coconut cream, coconut oil, noni and copra. Expatriate remittances are an important element of the economy as is a large automotive wire harness factory and tourism now accounts for 25% of GDP.
